As the second largest metropolitan area in South America, Rio de Janeiro The city was the capital of Brazil for nearly two centuries, from 1763 to 1822 during the Portuguese colonial era, and from 1822 to 1960 as an independent nation. It is also the former capital of the Portuguese Empire (1808–1821). Commonly known as just Rio, the city is also nicknamed “Cuidad Maravillosas” (the Marvelous City), and lives by its reputation to the letter.

Salvador de Bahia

Salvador de Bahia, or simply Bahia by locals, stuns its visitors with an energy and beauty that few cities can duplicate. Salvador is the country’s Afro-Brazilian epicenter and the former capital of Portugal’s New World colony. The captivating city is a living museum of 17th- and 18th-century architecture and captivating cathedrals. Bahia is also the nexus of an incredible arts movement.
